A devastating tragedy unfolded off the coast of Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, on Sunday evening, when ten members of a single family drowned while collecting clams. The incident occurred near the village of Yellur, approximately 5 km from Bhatkal town, and has left the community in mourning.
According to local officials, the family, believed to be from the nearby village of Yellur, had gone to the shore around 4:30 PM to collect clams, a common livelihood activity in the region. As they ventured into the sea, a sudden high tide caught them off guard, sweeping them away. Despite immediate rescue efforts by local fishermen and police, all ten individuals—including women and children—were found dead. The deceased have been identified as members of the same family, including two children aged 8 and 12.
The rescue operation was hampered by rough sea conditions, which delayed recovery efforts. Authorities confirmed the bodies were retrieved late Sunday night and sent for post-mortem examinations. The local administration has announced compensation of ₹5 lakh each to the victims’ families and has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
