Fifteen days after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as a cabinet minister in the West Bengal government, the Falta assembly constituency remains without a legislator. The delay stems from a repolling order issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) following serious allegations of tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and other electoral irregularities during the April 29 phase of the assembly elections.
The ECI’s decision to order repolling across all 285 polling booths in Falta came after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and other opposition parties raised concerns over the integrity of the electoral process. The complaints included reports of EVM malfunctioning, discrepancies in voter turnout records, and instances of booth capture or intimidation. While the ECI has not yet announced a fresh date for the repoll, the uncertainty has prolonged the interim period during which Falta is effectively represented only through administrative channels.
