Renowned sitarist, composer and producer Anoushka Shankar has shared a deeply personal account on Instagram of an incident in which a fan lifted her off the ground without her consent during a post-show interaction. The Grammy-nominated artist described the moment as unsettling and said it triggered long-dormant memories linked to her history of abuse.
In a detailed post, Shankar recounted how the man asked permission but did not wait for an answer before lifting her into a bear hug. “He asked if he could, but didn’t wait for an answer before I found myself suspended in the air, clasped in a bear hug by a stranger, feet dangling,” she wrote. She said the interaction happened quickly as she was meeting fans after a performance. Although she laughed awkwardly, asked to be let down, signed a poster and waved, the moment left her shaken.
