The eagerly awaited mythological epic *Ramayana*, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and headlined by Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, is poised to redefine Indian cinema with its colossal scale and technological ambition. Produced under Prime Focus Studios and Monster Mind Creations by Namit Malhotra and Yash, the film is being mounted on a reported budget of nearly ₹4,000 crore, making it one of the most expensive and ambitious projects in the history of Indian filmmaking.
The cinematic adaptation will unfold in two parts, with the first installment scheduled for theatrical release on Diwali 2026, followed by Part 2 on Diwali 2027. The ensemble cast brings together some of the biggest names in Bollywood: Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as the antagonist Ravana. The supporting cast includes veterans like Sunny Deol, Lara Dutta, and Ravi Dubey, adding gravitas and star power to the mythological narrative.
Adding a global dimension to the project, music maestro AR Rahman has collaborated with legendary German composer Hans Zimmer—an Oscar winner with four Grammys—for the film’s soundtrack. Speaking to journalist Faridoon Shahryar in a recent interview, Rahman described the collaboration as “epic,” emphasizing the cultural significance of bringing Zimmer into an Indian mythological epic. “I think it’s an epic collaboration. That too, to do a film which is our own, from our country and culture. Bringing him as almost like an ambassador to the world, to non-Indians,” Rahman said. He also highlighted Zimmer’s influence on generations of musicians and his reputation for setting artistic standards. “He has also worn many hats. He is a true artiste who thinks so differently than other people. He set a standard while inspiring generations. To work with him is definitely a great honour,” Rahman added.
Reflecting on his experience watching the film’s trailer in 3D, Rahman expressed awe at the technological scale and artistic vision of *Ramayana*. “It is one of the biggest films of my career. Not only the story, we all know the story, and how we respect it, but the technology. Just even watching the trailer on 3D is incredible. I’ve never seen anything of Indian or in the whole world as a piece of art. It’s so incredible on 3D, the music and sound,” he remarked.
The collaboration between Rahman and Zimmer is expected to draw international attention to the film, with Zimmer’s global reputation likely to attract audiences beyond India. Rahman also stressed the respect the team holds for the source material, emphasizing that while the story of the Ramayana is universally known, its cinematic interpretation through cutting-edge technology and artistic vision sets this adaptation apart.
As anticipation builds with the release dates approaching, *Ramayana* stands as a testament to India’s growing capabilities in large-scale cinematic storytelling. With a record budget, a stellar cast, and a groundbreaking musical collaboration, the film is set to become a landmark in Indian cinema and a cultural milestone for audiences worldwide.
