The Indian Army carried out a successful rescue operation in the Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Monday night (June 1, 2026), evacuating civilians who had become stranded in the fast-flowing Kishanganga River. The stranded individuals were trapped in their vehicles in the Chakwali area of north Kashmir’s Gurez Valley after the rising waters overwhelmed the vehicles during the early hours of June 1. The incident occurred amid a severe heatwave gripping the Kashmir Valley, which has driven increased tourist activity in the scenic Gurez Valley, located close to the Line of Control (LoC).
