A devastating avalanche struck the upper catchment area of the Kanchan Ganga near the Kuber Bhandar peak in Chamoli district on Sunday morning (May 24, 2026). According to officials, the avalanche occurred approximately two kilometres ahead of the revered Badrinath shrine. However, the situation remains under control, with no loss of life or property damage reported. The officials attributed the incident to a natural occurrence, stating that such events are common in snow-covered peaks.
The avalanche, which was reportedly triggered from the Kuber Bhandar peak, did not cause any disruption to the Badrinath National Highway. The snow mass stopped within a valley area, preventing it from reaching the main road. As a result, traffic and daily life in the region remain unaffected. The district administration has assured the public that the situation is under control, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure public safety.
