Coimbatore district is grappling with heightened concerns over crime and substance abuse in deserted areas surrounding its scenic tanks after two recent murders in less than two months. On Friday, the body of a 10-year-old girl was discovered in bushes abutting the Kannampalayam tank near Sulur. The discovery has intensified fears among residents about the safety of public spaces, particularly those located away from regular surveillance.
The unease is not unfounded. Just a month earlier, on May 18, a 41-year-old man was found murdered near the Achankulam tank on the city outskirts. According to authorities, the victim was allegedly brought to the tank bund by two of his coworkers on the night of May 17, where he was killed over a petty dispute. All three involved were reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The location, surrounded by coconut groves, has long been identified by locals as a hotspot for anti-social activities, including liquor consumption and drug abuse.
