MANILA, May 25, 2026 — The death toll from the collapse of a nine-storey building under construction in Angeles City, Philippines, has risen to three, with 17 people still missing, authorities confirmed on Monday. The tragedy unfolded on Sunday, May 24, when the structure gave way, striking a nearby hotel and killing a Malaysian national who was staying there. Two trapped construction workers were rescued alive but later succumbed to their injuries despite frantic medical efforts.
Regional fire bureau spokeswoman Maria Leah Sajili told AFP that the first rescued worker, pulled from the rubble alive, suffered a fatal collapse shortly after extraction. “The first of the two was pulled out alive, but unfortunately, his body gave out, and he did not survive,” Sajili explained. “Doctors could not resuscitate him.” The second worker suffered a cardiac arrest around 3:00 a.m. (1900 GMT Sunday) while still trapped, and medical teams were unable to reach him in time due to the unstable conditions.
