Ebola, a highly contagious and deadly viral disease, was first identified in 1976 in what is now the DRC. Since then, more than 15,400 individuals have lost their lives to the disease worldwide. The current outbreak is the second-largest in the history of Ebola, following the 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa.
