Petrol and diesel prices in India climbed sharply for the fourth time in less than two weeks on Monday, May 25, 2025, with the latest increase pushing petrol above ₹100 per litre in Delhi for the first time since May 2022. State-run oil marketing companies raised pump prices by ₹2.61 per litre for petrol and ₹2.71 per litre for diesel, following similar hikes on May 15, May 19, and May 23. This brings the cumulative increase in fuel prices to nearly ₹7.5 per litre since the first revision on May 15, after a four-year freeze in retail rates.
In Delhi, petrol is now priced at ₹102.12 per litre, up from ₹99.51, while diesel reaches ₹95.20 per litre, compared to ₹92.49 earlier. Across the four major metros, the price surge varied. Kolkata saw the sharpest rise in petrol at ₹2.87 per litre, taking the rate to ₹113.51 per litre. In Mumbai, diesel prices increased the most by ₹2.81 per litre, reaching ₹97.83. Chennai experienced relatively lower hikes—petrol rose by ₹2.46 to ₹107.77 and diesel by ₹2.57 to ₹99.55. These differences reflect variations in local taxes and state levies, even though the underlying crude oil cost is the same nationally.
