New Delhi, June 12: Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the double murder that took place in Govindpuri on June 5. The accused, identified as Rakesh Kumar, is the cousin of one of the victims, 22-year-old Priya Sharma. He was apprehended following an encounter in the Kalkaji area late Tuesday night, officials confirmed.
According to the police, Priya Sharma and her friend, 24-year-old Rahul Verma, were found dead in Priya’s flat in Govindpuri on June 5 evening. Initial investigations revealed that both victims had been strangled to death. A missing complaint was filed by Priya’s family on the same night after they failed to reach her. The police found no signs of forced entry, suggesting the victims knew their attacker.
Rakesh Kumar, who had gone missing shortly after the crime, was traced through mobile phone signals and CCTV footage. During the encounter in Kalkaji, he reportedly tried to flee when confronted by police, leading to a brief scuffle before he was overpowered and arrested. Police recovered a bloodstained shirt from his residence during a subsequent search.
