The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Monday foiled an attempt to smuggle a massive consignment of painkiller tablets worth ₹3.28 crore intended for Sri Lanka. The operation took place near Mandapam in the Gulf of Mannar, off the coast of Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu.
According to officials, ICG personnel were conducting a routine patrol using a hovercraft in the waters between Vedalai and Seeniappa Dargah when they noticed suspicious activity on the beach. Smugglers were seen unloading cartons from a truck parked near the shore. Upon detecting the presence of the ICG team, the smugglers abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, leaving behind the contraband. The seized consignment consisted of 8,46,000 painkiller tablets, packed in 12 large boxes. The estimated street value of the tablets is approximately ₹3.28 crore, as per the ICG’s assessment.
