The Indian Metrological Corporation (IMC) has intensified its drive against fuel-rule violations by seizing multiple illegal petrol pumps and imposing heavy penalties on errant tanker operators across several states. In coordinated raids conducted over the past fortnight, IMC officials dismantled unauthorised fuel dispensing units, many of which were operating without mandatory licences or safety clearances.
During the crackdown, IMC teams also intercepted several tankers transporting fuel without proper documentation or exceeding permissible load limits. Sources within the IMC confirmed that at least 17 illegal pumps were shut down in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu alone. Additionally, 23 tanker operators were fined a total of ₹1.8 crore for violations including transporting fuel without valid permits, tampering with meters, and using uncertified vehicles.
One senior IMC official stated, “We are targeting both supply-side and distribution-side violations to curb adulteration and black marketing. Unauthorised pumps not only flout safety norms but also facilitate tax evasion and adulteration of fuel.” The official also highlighted that many seized pumps were located near highways and rural areas, where oversight is traditionally weaker.
