The latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6), conducted by the Union Ministry of Family and Health Welfare (MoHFW), has exposed significant challenges in women’s health, safety, and autonomy in Odisha. Among the most alarming findings is that nearly one in five women aged 18-49 in the state (18%) reported experiencing domestic violence from their partners. This prevalence was higher in rural areas, where 19.6% of women faced such violence, compared to 15.2% in urban regions. The survey also highlights a concerning decline in women’s participation in household decision-making, with only 87.2% of women in Odisha actively involved in key decisions—slightly below the national average of 89% and down from 90% in the previous NFHS-5 (2019-21).
