Police in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday announced the dismantling of an interstate sex-determination racket that stretched across multiple districts and allegedly involved illegal prenatal screening to determine the sex of unborn children. Six individuals, including ultrasound technicians, lab operators and middlemen, were taken into custody during coordinated raids carried out in Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Bijnor.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Singh, the operation was initiated following intelligence inputs about clandestine ultrasound clinics conducting sex-selection tests in violation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994. Investigations revealed that the accused operated a network where pregnant women were lured with promises of confidential sex-determination tests, after which those found carrying female fetuses were reportedly pressured into abortions or faced coercion.
