At least 24 people were killed and more than 100 injured on Sunday, May 24, 2026, when a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVB-IED) detonated near a train carrying Pakistani military personnel in Quetta, Balochistan. The explosion occurred shortly after the train departed from Quetta military cantonment and targeted the Jaffar Express, causing one of its three bogies to be completely destroyed. The blast derailed the train, triggered a fire, and damaged nearby houses and vehicles. Rescue operations are ongoing, with fears the death toll may rise as more victims are recovered from the wreckage.
The attack took place near Chaman Phatak railway station at around 9:00 AM local time. The explosion shattered windows and glass panels of nearby buildings, while at least 10 vehicles parked in the vicinity were also damaged. Emergency services and local volunteers rushed to the scene, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals including Quetta Civil Hospital, Frontier Corps (FC) Hospital, and Combined Military Hospital (CMH). An emergency was declared in all government hospitals across Quetta, with doctors and medical staff called in to handle the influx of patients.
