The Chennai Corporation has announced a major infrastructure project in the Tondiarpet zone, involving the construction of a 2,400-metre pedestrian corridor with integrated underground utilities. The project, estimated to cost ₹71.90 crore, will run from the New Washermenpet Metro station to the Tollgate Metro station, including a stretch along Arunachaleswarar Koil Street. The initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety and improve urban infrastructure by integrating essential utilities beneath the walkway.
During an inspection on Monday, Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran reviewed the progress and directed officials to expedite the project. He emphasized the need for coordination with various service departments to ensure seamless execution without delays. Sameeran also instructed the removal of roadside encroachments, including shops, to facilitate smooth construction. The project includes the provision of underground ducts to carry electric cables, drinking water pipelines, sewer lines, and data network cables, ensuring a modern and efficient utility network.
The project is part of the Corporation’s broader efforts to upgrade pedestrian infrastructure and integrate essential services in a single corridor. By combining multiple utilities underground, the initiative aims to reduce surface congestion and improve the overall urban environment in Tondiarpet. The inclusion of drinking water, sewer, and data lines alongside electric cables highlights the project’s comprehensive approach to urban development.
In addition to the pedestrian corridor, Sameeran also reviewed sanitation efforts in the Kodambakkam zone. He inspected waste clearance from public bins and sanitation work along Vadapalani Nerkundram Road. The Commissioner directed authorities to ensure prompt garbage removal and maintain cleanliness around public bin locations to uphold public health and hygiene standards.
The Corporation’s focus on integrated infrastructure and sanitation reflects its commitment to improving the quality of urban life in Chennai. The pedestrian corridor project is expected to not only enhance mobility but also streamline utility management, reducing the need for frequent road digging and disruptions. Residents and commuters in Tondiarpet are likely to benefit from safer walkways and improved access to essential services.
With work set to begin soon on the sub-surface infrastructure, the project is poised to set a precedent for future urban development initiatives in the city. The Corporation’s proactive approach in coordinating with service departments and addressing encroachments demonstrates its determination to execute the project efficiently and effectively.
As Chennai continues to expand its infrastructure, such initiatives play a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable and user-friendly urban environment. The pedestrian corridor project in Tondiarpet is a step forward in the city’s journey toward modern urban living.
