Chennai, May 24 2026: The Tamil Nadu Alliance of Resident Welfare Associations (T.N. AORWA) has formally requested Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to defer upcoming local body elections—covering city corporations, municipalities, town panchayats and panchayat unions—arguing that holding the polls could perpetuate corruption and political interference that plagued the previous regime.
In a detailed representation submitted to the Chief Minister on Sunday night, the federation cited the traditional six-month window between Assembly elections and local body polls as a guideline, but argued that the current circumstances warranted a deviation in the larger public interest. T.N. AORWA alleged that under the previous government local representatives had prioritised misuse of power over public service, systematically sidelining civic issues raised by resident welfare associations and social activists through intimidation, threats and bureaucratic interference.
