The Sri Lankan Navy on Monday rescued six Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who had illegally crossed into the island nation from Tamil Nadu by boat. The incident occurred near the seventh sandbar off the northern coast of Sri Lanka. According to official sources, the six individuals were intercepted during a routine naval patrol and handed over to the Thalaimannar Police Station for further processing.
All six refugees were identified as Sasikumar (46), Kalaiselvi (41), Rajithan (20), Abhishekeswaran (8), Sliya (12), and Akkineswari (78). They hail from the Mullaithivu and Puthukudiyiruppu areas in Sri Lanka. Official records indicate that these individuals had fled to India during the economic crisis in Sri Lanka and were residing at the Mandapam camp in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. The camp has been providing temporary shelter to over 320 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who arrived in Dhanushkodi over the past three years, under humanitarian assistance extended by the Tamil Nadu government.
