The Coimbatore Corporation has initiated a comprehensive survey to design and develop pedestrian walkways along State Bank Road, adjacent to the Coimbatore railway junction. The proposed infrastructure upgrade aims to cover a 600-metre stretch between the Collectorate and the Lanka Corner underpass, with an additional short stretch extending towards the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The move is part of a broader effort to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility in the area.
According to officials from the Corporation, the existing footpaths along State Bank Road are in poor condition, with uneven surfaces and limited walking space due to encroachments by roadside shops. These encroachments have significantly reduced the available pedestrian space, forcing many commuters to walk on the road, even during heavy vehicular traffic. A senior Corporation official stated, “There are plans to upgrade the pedestrian facilities along the stretch to address these issues.” The official emphasized that the project will prioritize the creation of safe and accessible walkways for the public.
