In a landmark decision aimed at revitalising Tamil cinema, Chief Minister and former actor Joseph Vijay has approved a new directive allowing theatres across Tamil Nadu to schedule five daily shows for any new film during the first seven days of its release. The order, issued on May 25, 2026, extends this permission to weekends, public holidays, and local festival days, marking a significant shift from existing regulations.
The directive follows a representation received by the Chief Minister on May 16, 2026, from representatives of the Tamil film industry. The order explicitly states, “Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced that all theatres across Tamil Nadu screening newly released Tamil films will be permitted to run five shows per day for seven days from the date of release.” The statement added that the Chief Minister reviewed petitions submitted by various stakeholders in the film industry before issuing the directive.
Under the existing Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres are permitted to screen only four shows per day. Additional shows were previously allowed only on specific occasions such as public holidays, festival days, or for films released on special occasions, provided approval was obtained from district collectors or, in Chennai, the city police commissioner. The new directive eliminates the need for separate approvals for the fifth daily show during the first week of a new film’s release.
The order clarifies that the permission applies not only to original Tamil films but also to dubbed versions, re-released films, children’s films, and those screened in both digital and non-digital formats. This inclusive approach ensures broader support across various segments of the Tamil film industry.
The decision comes as a major boost for the ailing Tamil cinema sector, which has been facing challenges due to reduced footfalls and competition from digital streaming platforms. By allowing more screening opportunities, the government aims to enhance box-office collections and encourage theatrical releases, fostering growth in the state’s film industry.
The announcement was shared on social media by the official handle of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, @CMOTamilNadu, which stated, “All theatres in Tamil Nadu will be allowed to screen five shows daily for new Tamil films for seven days from the release date.” The post included a visual message in Tamil reinforcing the new policy.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, describing it as a reasonable and timely intervention. Theatre owners’ associations had earlier submitted requests highlighting the need for increased screening slots to recover from financial setbacks exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and changing viewer habits.
This policy change reflects the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to supporting cultural and entertainment sectors, particularly those affected by recent disruptions. With the new directive in place, filmmakers and exhibitors can expect improved revenue streams and audience engagement during the crucial first week of a film’s theatrical run.
