A 17-year-old youth, Gubendran of North Masi Street in Madurai, was brutally hacked to death in the early hours of Monday, May 25, 2026, just steps away from the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple — one of Tamil Nadu’s most visited and tightly secured religious landmarks. The attack occurred around 4 am near a corporation-run parking complex on North Avani Moola Street, close to the temple premises, according to police statements.
According to investigators, five assailants on two motorcycles surrounded Gubendran and repeatedly attacked him with deadly weapons before fleeing through the temple’s narrow surrounding streets. Local CCTV footage, police said, captured both the assault and the gang’s escape route. Officers from Vilakkuthoon police station rushed to the scene upon receiving information and transported the victim’s body to Government Rajaji Hospital for autopsy. Forensic teams later examined the area and collected evidence.
