Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Friday after Iranian forces launched a series of retaliatory strikes targeting a US military airbase in Iraq and Kuwait. The move came in response to a US operation earlier this week in which American forces intercepted multiple Iranian drones near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and destroyed a drone command post in Bandar Abbas, Iran.
According to reports, US forces shot down four one-way attack drones on Thursday as they approached the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes daily. A fifth drone was reportedly destroyed before it could be launched from a control site in Bandar Abbas, which US officials described as a preparation zone for imminent hostile action. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that its forces acted in self-defense and in accordance with international law.
