Thiruneelakudi police have arrested a 62-year-old woman from Thirunageswaram for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a 75-year-old woman in Kumbakonam. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 24, 2026, when the accused, identified as Shanthi, visited the house of Thavamani on the Kumbakonam-Karaikal Main Road under the pretext of renting a portion of the house.
According to police sources, Shanthi allegedly took out a knife during the conversation and threatened Thavamani, who was living alone, to hand over her gold chain. When Thavamani refused, Shanthi reportedly snatched the chain and threw chilli powder on her face as she resisted. The elderly victim sustained minor injuries and was unable to resist further.
Following the incident, Thiruneelakudi police registered a case and launched an investigation. Police sources stated that they collected video footage from nearby shops, which helped them track down Shanthi. The accused was arrested on Monday, May 25, 2026, and remanded to judicial custody.
