Kolkata, May 30: In a significant move aimed at promoting gender equality and women's empowerment, the West Bengal government has announced that all women will be allowed to travel free of cost on state-run buses starting June 1. The decision was formally notified by the state Transport Department, making West Bengal the latest Indian state to implement such a scheme.
The notification explicitly states that "free transportation shall be provided in all state-run buses to all women of West Bengal," covering both short-route and long-route services. This initiative applies to all categories of women—students, working professionals, homemakers, and senior citizens—without any income or age restrictions. The scheme is expected to benefit millions of women who regularly commute via state-operated buses such as the WBTC (West Bengal Transport Corporation) and other government-run transport services.
