A tragic incident unfolded on the Ganga river near Varanasi on Monday evening as a boat capsized, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and leaving four others missing, according to officials. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM local time, when the overcrowded boat, reportedly carrying 14 passengers, lost balance and overturned near the Dashashwamedh Ghat area, a popular yet notoriously congested spot for river activities.
Local residents and boat operators rushed to the scene, pulling several survivors from the water, while others remained trapped beneath the capsized vessel. The district administration confirmed that three bodies—identified as 45-year-old Rajesh Kumar, 32-year-old Priya Sharma, and 10-year-old Amit Patel—had been recovered by 9 PM. Meanwhile, search-and-rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police, continued efforts to locate the four missing individuals, whose identities are yet to be disclosed. The boat’s operator, identified as 50-year-old Gopal Mishra, survived the accident and was taken into custody for questioning.
