The Udham Singh Nagar police in Uttarakhand have busted a major counterfeit currency racket. Under ‘Operation Prahar’, they recovered fake notes worth ₹4.54 crore. This operation is being termed as one of the largest seizures of counterfeit currency in the state since Independence. Police said the fake notes were stored in the police station, packed in 17 boxes. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to local police officials, the racket had been operating for quite some time. The accused had produced a large quantity of fake currency and were planning to circulate it in the market. Police sources revealed that the quality of the counterfeit notes was so high that it was difficult for common people to distinguish them from genuine currency. The racket was exposed after sustained efforts by the police and credible intelligence inputs.
