A woman from Jiangsu province in eastern China, referred to as Wang (name changed), decided in 2020 to undergo cosmetic surgery to enhance her appearance. She spent 12,000 yuan (approximately ₹1.7 lakh) at a cosmetic clinic in Suzhou to undergo double eyelid surgery—a procedure commonly performed in East Asia to create an artificial crease in the eyelids for a more attractive look. For Wang, however, this decision turned out to be the biggest mistake of her life.
Immediately after the surgery, Wang experienced unbearable pain and swelling in her eyes. The situation worsened to the point where her eyelids turned outward, and tears flowed continuously. She was rushed to the nearest hospital, where doctors made a shocking revelation: the surgery had been performed so poorly that Wang’s lacrimal gland was completely damaged. Despite the doctors’ best efforts to repair the damage, it was irreversible. As a result, Wang’s eyelids can no longer close, meaning she cannot sleep with her eyes shut—her eyes remain open 24 hours a day.
