In a significant move to enhance law and order in conflict-scarred Manipur, the State police has become the proud owner of one of the largest fleets of armoured vehicles in the country. The 477 newly acquired vehicles, flagged off by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on May 25, 2026, include 60 bulletproof Rakshak vehicles, 10 mine-protected vehicles, and five heavy machine repair vehicles. This acquisition is a part of the Assistance to States for Modernisation of Police scheme, which has been approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The fleet, which is the largest in the northeastern region, is a testament to the Centre's commitment to strengthening the police forces across the country. The Chief Minister, while flagging off the vehicles, emphasized the importance of a well-equipped police force in maintaining peace and security. "These vehicles will greatly help in improving police infrastructure in the hill districts and strengthen emergency response capabilities across the State," he said. The State police, along with the armed forces, has been battling a series of ethnic conflicts involving many communities since May 3, 2023.
The acquisition of these armoured vehicles has been made possible with the approval of ₹196.61 crore on October 31, 2025, for police modernisation initiatives in Manipur. The funds were allocated to enhance the capabilities of the police personnel, who have been undertaking risky operations to prevent conflict and maintain peace. The government has also increased the allowances of police personnel, which had remained unchanged for a long time. The Chief Minister appealed to the people to discourage violence and provocative activities during agitations and rallies, urging all sections to support peace and harmony in the State.
The new vehicles will significantly improve the mobility, efficiency, and response capability of the Manipur Police during emergencies and other important situations. State Home Minister Govindas Khothoujam said the event reflected the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to strengthening police and security forces across the country. Director General of Police Rajiv Singh highlighted the achievements of the Manipur police, including the arrest of 1,000 people after the establishment of the Anti-Extortion Cell and more than 700 arrests and 600 cases registered under the anti-drug campaign. The allocation of 54% of the newly acquired vehicles to the hill districts and 46% to the valley districts is expected to enhance the police presence in these areas and improve the response to emergencies.
The acquisition of these armoured vehicles is a significant step towards strengthening the police forces in Manipur and enhancing the capabilities of the personnel. It is also a testament to the Centre's commitment to providing support to the States in modernizing their police forces. The government's efforts to increase the allowances of police personnel and enhance the police infrastructure are expected to improve the morale of the personnel and enhance their capabilities to tackle the challenges posed by the ongoing conflicts.
The cooperation of the public is crucial in strengthening the intelligence gathering capabilities of the police and preventing subversive incidents. The Director General of Police has appealed to the people to cooperate with the police and provide them with information that can help in preventing crimes and maintaining law and order. The acquisition of these armoured vehicles is expected to have a positive impact on the law and order situation in Manipur and enhance the capabilities of the police to maintain peace and security.
The new vehicles will also improve the response to emergencies and other important situations. The State Home Minister has emphasized the importance of the police being people-friendly and working closely with the public to maintain law and order. The government's efforts to enhance the capabilities of the police and provide them with the necessary resources are expected to improve the morale of the personnel and enhance their capabilities to tackle the challenges posed by the ongoing conflicts.
