Pune’s much-anticipated Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor has faced yet another setback, with authorities confirming that the sixth deadline for completion has been missed. The ambitious 31.25-kilometre project, which aims to connect key IT hubs like Hinjewadi with central Pune and Shivajinagar, was originally scheduled for completion in 2021. However, repeated delays due to land acquisition issues, utility relocations, and technical challenges have pushed the timeline further back.
Officials from the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) stated that while work on certain sections—particularly the elevated stretches—has made progress, the underground tunnel sections, which are critical for seamless connectivity, remain behind schedule. The phased opening, initially planned in segments, now appears uncertain as contractors struggle to meet revised deadlines. Sources within the project management team revealed that soil conditions in some areas have posed unforeseen difficulties, further complicating tunnel construction.
