Industry leaders, including the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), have urged the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to allocate Rs 350 crore for the extension of the runway at Tiruchirappalli International Airport (TRZ) in Tamil Nadu. The demand comes as part of efforts to enhance the airport’s operational capacity and support the growing air traffic demand in southern India.
The existing runway at Trichy Airport, measuring 2,480 meters, is currently inadequate to handle larger aircraft such as the Boeing 747 or Airbus A350, which are increasingly being deployed by airlines on domestic and international routes. The proposed extension aims to add 1,000 meters to the runway, bringing its total length to 3,480 meters. This upgrade is expected to accommodate wide-body aircraft, reduce operational constraints, and facilitate the operation of direct international flights, thereby boosting tourism and trade in the region.
