Preparations for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, scheduled for 2027, are in full swing. A fierce battle is expected between Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP has now targeted leaders involved in defection with its slogan, *"Buntenge Toh Kuttenge"* (If you split, you’ll be cut down), symbolizing its strong stance against political turncoats. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia clarified, *“Those who defect will not be accommodated in our party. Our policy is to punish defection.”*
However, Akhilesh Yadav has sought to turn this slogan into an advantage for his party. The SP has urged its workers to stay united, with party spokesperson Abdullah Azam stating, *“The BJP’s slogan is an attempt to weaken our party. Our workers will stand together to counter this attack.”* Yadav has taken a tough stance against defecting leaders in recent years, even suspending MLAs who switched sides, which may limit the BJP’s defection policy from benefiting the SP.
