Reports have emerged of a major irregularity in the public sector LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinder inspections conducted in the Alangode region of Malappuram district, Kerala. Between September 15 and 20, 2023, inspections revealed that over 660 cylinders were empty. The checks covered LPG cylinders from seven public sector dealerships, and it was found that none contained gas—only other substances.
Owners of the public sector LPG dealerships, when questioned about the inspection, claimed they had done nothing wrong and argued that not filling cylinders with gas would result in financial losses for them. However, the discovery of this irregularity has further eroded consumer trust. The inspection, conducted under the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), raises serious questions about the integrity of gas distribution in the public sector.
IOC officials, responding to the incident, assured that administrative action would be taken based on the inspection results and that stricter measures would be implemented to prevent such malpractices. Despite these assurances, consumers remain skeptical about the reliability of gas cylinders following such incidents.
