Madurai city has seen a significant boost in traffic monitoring with the deployment of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. In a span of just three months, these intelligent systems have detected more than 15,000 traffic violations, according to the latest data released by local traffic authorities.
Introduced as part of a broader initiative to improve road discipline and reduce accidents, the ANPR cameras are strategically placed at major junctions, highways, and high-risk zones across the city. These cameras automatically capture license plate details of vehicles violating traffic rules, such as jumping red lights, speeding, and illegal parking. Once a violation is recorded, a challan (fine notice) is generated and sent to the vehicle owner’s registered address through the government’s digital payment portal.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Police and the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Officials have stated that the system has not only increased compliance with traffic laws but has also reduced the manual workload on traffic police personnel. “The ANPR system has made traffic enforcement more efficient and transparent,” said a senior police officer. “It ensures that violations are detected and penalised without human bias.”
