West Bengal police have launched a unique and strict campaign to teach criminals a lesson. Under this initiative, criminals are being paraded on the streets wearing half-pants, a *sando gnzi* (loose sleeveless shirt), and a rope tied around their waists. The campaign is primarily being observed in the North Howrah and Sankrail areas. This step by the police comes after the state government, led by Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari, has adopted new methods to send a strong message to criminals.
The first prominent example of this campaign is Akash Singh, a notorious criminal dubbed the ‘don’ of the area. Akash Singh is accused of firing at police personnel, carrying out over 20 bomb blasts, and involvement in various criminal activities. He had already been arrested by the police. To send a strong message to society’s criminals, Akash Singh was later given a *mundan* (head shave), made to wear a *gnzi* and underwear, and paraded on the streets. This incident was witnessed on 24 May 2026 on the streets of North Howrah, where he was surrounded by several police personnel.
