Reports indicate that essential commodity prices have risen sharply in several parts of Tamil Nadu following recent cyclone damage. Local traders say the prices of vegetables, dairy products, food grains and cooking oil have all climbed.
Traders explain that transport routes and roads have been damaged by the cyclone, disrupting supplies. With demand high and supply low, prices have shot up. In some areas, power and water supply disruptions have also hurt production and storage.
Facing the price surge, the public has turned on traders, accusing some of opportunistically jacking up prices in the wake of the disaster. There are also calls for the government to monitor the situation closely and take steps to rein in prices.
The state’s Food and Civil Supplies Department says it is tracking the price rise and will take necessary action. It has also urged people to use subsidised goods made available by the government.
For communities still recovering from the cyclone, the price spike has added to their burden. Both authorities and traders now face the urgent task of tackling this challenge together.
