Surat, Gujarat – The burnt body of a newborn baby was discovered in a plastic bag near a garbage dump in the densely populated Udhna area of Surat on the morning of June 12, 2024. Local residents alerted authorities after noticing smoke and a foul smell emanating from the spot, leading to the grim discovery. Preliminary investigations suggest the baby was recently deceased before being set ablaze, though the exact cause of death remains undetermined.
Police from Udhna police station registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and have launched a probe to identify the perpetrators. Senior Inspector Rakesh Patel stated that forensic experts and a post-mortem examination are being conducted to ascertain the cause of death and collect evidence. “We are treating this as a case of unnatural death and are pursuing all possible leads,” Patel said.
