As Karnataka celebrated Bakrid with great fervour, the auction of sacrificial animals reached unprecedented levels across several regions. Devotees thronged the markets ahead of the holy day to purchase animals for their religious commitments.
Auctions for sacrificial animals in Mangaluru’s key markets had already begun by Friday. Local traders had sourced high-quality bulls from various parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. Some of these bulls, prized for their strength and weight, fetched up to ₹5 lakh. According to market sources, while bulls usually sold between ₹15,000 and ₹30,000, this year they were priced between ₹75,000 and ₹1 lakh. Only select breeds commanded prices as high as ₹5 lakh, drawing the attention of wealthy buyers.
Demand for sacrificial animals also saw a significant rise in Bengaluru, the state capital. Nearly 4,000 bulls were auctioned across various parts of the city, with most selling for between ₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh. Market analysts attribute the price surge to the increased willingness of people to fulfil their religious and social obligations during the festival.
