Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has informed the Tamil Nadu government and the Union government that the first operational stretch of Phase II—linking Poonamallee to Vadapalani—can now be inaugurated. The development comes after the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) granted formal approval on Tuesday for the 14.6-kilometre corridor, paving the way for regular train services.
The clearance follows a comprehensive fifth safety inspection. A CCRS team conducted on-site verification on May 23 and 24, visiting stations along the route and taking test rides. This assessment culminated in the removal of earlier operational restrictions imposed by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) in February 2026. At that time, the CRS had permitted only conditional operations: a 15-minute headway between Poonamallee and Porur and a requirement to complete 26 deck slabs in the double-decker corridor before activating Vadapalani station.
