Residents from multiple villages in Thoothukudi district on Monday submitted petitions at the Collectorate, raising concerns over the irregular provision of employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The grievances were addressed during the weekly grievance redressal meeting chaired by District Collector Vishu Mahajan.
Villagers from V Thalavaipuram, near Eppodhumvendran, stated that no MGNREGS work had been carried out in their village for the past two months, severely impacting their livelihoods. They highlighted that only were provided last year due to alleged , a claim made by officials. Agriculture being the primary source of income for the villagers, the absence of MGNREGS work has compounded their financial distress. Similarly, residents of in Kayathar union expressed concerns that their village panchayat, which comprises four hamlets, was divided into three sections for MGNREGS work allocation. However, for the current financial year , no work had been allocated, directly affecting their income sources.
