Investigations into the fire that broke out in a three-storey building near Delhi’s Ravidass Market on May 13, which claimed 27 lives, have exposed severe lapses in the building’s construction and safety measures. According to inquiry teams, the fire spread rapidly due to flaws in the building’s design and layout, preventing many from escaping in time.
The inquiry found that the rooftop (terrace) of the building was completely sealed, blocking the primary escape route. Additionally, there was only one staircase leading out of the building. The fire safety measures were found to be critically inadequate, with iron grills on the windows preventing people from jumping out or escaping safely. The fire reportedly started in the building’s kitchen, and firefighters’ limited resources hindered efforts to contain the blaze.
Fire officials have stressed that safety standards for old buildings in Delhi are dangerously weak and called for urgent action to prevent such tragedies. They have urged building owners, municipal authorities, and the government to enforce stricter regulations immediately.
