An office run by a news agency under the central government in Delhi was sealed without warning yesterday evening. The incident began around 4:30 p.m. local time, when government officials entered the premises, conducted a search, and then sealed all the doors. According to sources within the news agency, staff members have alleged physical abuse during the search. They claim they were beaten and forcibly removed from the office while it was being sealed.
Local sources report that the sealing order came directly from the central government. However, no official statement has yet been issued by the relevant government department. An employee who requested anonymity said that staff were subjected to abuse during the sealing process and that all important documents and equipment inside the office have been sealed.
Journalist groups in the city have condemned the incident. Leaders of the National Union of Journalists have stated that such action by government officials amounts to interference in free journalism. They have demanded an immediate investigation by the government.
