Eight people drowned on Thursday evening while collecting mussels in the Kali River near Shirali village in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. According to police, a group of 14 villagers had ventured into the river around 5:30 pm to gather mussels, a seasonal practice common among local communities living along riverbanks and coastal areas.
Witnesses reported that strong currents and sudden deep waters overwhelmed the group, leading to the tragedy. Local fishermen and villagers immediately launched a rescue operation. By nightfall, eight bodies were recovered, while search efforts continued for the remaining six individuals, who are feared drowned. Officials confirmed that all the deceased were residents of Shirali village.
