The Maharashtra government has issued a significant notification amending the election rules under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Under the new rules, individuals with more than two children will now be eligible to contest elections. Previously, candidates with more than two children were disqualified from contesting. However, this rule has now been revised to ensure equal opportunities for all candidates.
The primary objective behind this change is to enhance transparency and fairness in the electoral process. The decision was taken by the state government led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. According to information provided by the Chief Electoral Officer of the state, the new rule came into effect on January 1, 2024. Under this amendment, no candidate will be disqualified based on the number of their children.
One of the key benefits of this change is the promotion of diversity and inclusivity in the political arena. This will particularly benefit women and minority candidates. Additionally, the rule will help eliminate biased provisions in the electoral process. Political parties in the state have welcomed this change. Supriya Sule, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), praised the decision, stating, “This decision will enhance inclusivity in the political sphere and strengthen democracy.”
