The government has decided to re-identify 'black spots' on National Highway 31 (NH 31), a key highway connecting Karnataka and Maharashtra, to prevent accidents. An official order has been issued by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, directing authorities to reassess hazardous locations along NH 31 and take measures to reduce accident rates.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and state road transport departments are jointly conducting surveys across NH 31 to identify dangerous stretches. Data from previously identified black spots in 2020 and 2022 will be reviewed, and new areas showing signs of risk will also be designated as black spots and addressed accordingly.
NH 31 passes through Bagalkot, Gadag, Dharwad, and Belagavi districts in Karnataka, where heavy vehicle traffic and adverse weather conditions contribute to a higher incidence of accidents. Additionally, poorly maintained road stretches and a lack of essential safety features have been identified as contributing factors.
