The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged deaths of 53 pregnant women in Madhya Pradesh over the past few months. The Commission has sought a detailed report from the state government in this matter. According to sources, these deaths occurred across various districts, with most cases linked to government hospitals or health centers.
On August 23, 2024, the NHRC issued a letter and sent a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government. The letter instructs the state to compensate the families of the deceased women, take action against the concerned officials, and implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
