In Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, the Indrapuram substation is grappling with an extreme surge in electricity demand, plunging the local power supply into severe crisis. The substation, which normally handles 200 MW, is now facing a demand of 450 MW—more than double its capacity. According to officials, this exceeds the substation’s full capacity by 125%.
As a result, neighboring areas are experiencing prolonged power cuts, disrupting daily life for residents. While the local power distribution company (DISCOM) is working on emergency measures, the overwhelming load continues to worsen the situation. Since Tuesday morning, the crisis has escalated, with safety mechanisms at the substation also under threat due to relentless demand.
In Ghaziabad city and surrounding areas like Modinagar, Sahibabad, and Kirtinagar, power outages have become more frequent. The state government and DISCOM officials have apologized for the inconvenience, noting that the rising summer temperatures have increased electricity consumption by 30%—further straining the already stretched system.
