Bihar’s Bhagalpur district is witnessing renewed momentum in its long-pending plans to develop a greenfield airport, nearly a decade after the project was first proposed. Local authorities and aviation officials have confirmed that fresh feasibility studies are underway, with state and central government agencies evaluating technical, financial, and environmental aspects of the proposed site near Sabour, approximately 12 kilometres from the city centre.
The revival of the airport project comes after years of dormancy, during which land acquisition and funding challenges stalled progress. A senior official from the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC), who requested anonymity, stated that the state government has allocated ₹5 crore for preliminary studies, including soil testing and topographical surveys. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) is also reportedly considering technical support under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN), which could provide viability gap funding and operational incentives for airlines.
