The Indian women’s cricket team has made a strategic change for the opening match of the three-match T20 International series against England, resting regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur ahead of the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. Instead, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has been handed the leadership for the first T20I, scheduled to be played at the iconic Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
India’s head coach, Amol Muzumdar, confirmed the decision, stating that the team management wanted to manage Harmanpreet Kaur’s workload ahead of the global tournament. “We thought it would be good to give her some rest and let the team try different combinations,” Muzumdar told reporters during a pre-match press conference. The move reflects a cautious approach to player rotation, ensuring key personnel are fresh for the World Cup.
