The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has intervened in a dispute over the alteration of temple timings at the revered Sri Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur, Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. The court has directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department to decide on an application challenging the change in temple timings.
The petition was filed by the Sri Subramaniya Swamy Thirukovil Sudhanthira Paribalana Sthalatharkal Sabha of Tiruchendur, which represents the temple's management. The petitioner's counsel argued that the temple's opening timings cannot be altered based on the increasing number of devotees visiting the temple. They claimed that the temple is bound by Agamas, ancient scriptures that govern the temple's practices, and that 'Nadai Sathuthal' and 'Nadai Thirathal' are age-old practices that must be conducted as per these dictates. The counsel further argued that there are experts, including a Vidhayahar, who is an authority on these matters, and that the Executive Officer had not consulted him before altering the timings.
